DALTON, Ga. — Visitors to Saturday’s beer festival hosted annually by the Downtown Dalton Development Authority will notice the event got a little bit of a makeover for its 10th anniversary this year, said Kristi Watson, Main Street manager for the DDDA.
“We decided to mix it up a little bit and feature Georgia breweries this year,” Watson said.
The event, renamed the Downtown Dalton Brewer’s Festival, is from 4 to 8 p.m. at Burr Performing Arts Park at 101 S. Hamilton St. and includes beer makers from Georgia only, with nine craft brew companies offering a variety of their products. In additional to unlimited sampling, the event also includes live music from Matthew Paul Revere and headliners Blackbird Revival, as well as food vendors and a shirt maker printing event T-shirts on demand. General admission is $35 and VIP tickets are $60.
Among the beers on tap Saturday will be six offerings from Dalton Brewing Co., the downtown company that is sponsoring and helping organize the festival. Chris Brown, one of the four co-owners of the business, said the brewery will pour their raspberry chocolate stout, hazelnut coffee porter, Kölsch and mango India pale ale in the general admission area, as well as two previously unveiled brews — 3.3 IPA and pale ale 2.0 — in the VIP area.
Other perks of VIP access include 3 p.m. admission, an event T-shirt, catering from Café Ostro and a charging station for wireless devices.
“We are re-envisioning the beer fest this year,” said Brown. “We really wanted to focus on craft and the brewers … so most of the brewers on site, we hope to have representatives from the breweries there to talk about their beers. We wanted to do it locally, small, independent craft beers, so not affiliated with big beer. By doing that, it becomes more of an education event, not just a get drunk event. We want to expose people in this area to a wide variety of different styles of beer that they might not even know they like.”
Drew Michaels, another of the Dalton Brewing Co. owners, said it also helps the local business to have access to like-minded companies and the people behind them.
“I think it’s good to bring in these other successful small breweries that have been there longer than us to help Dalton realize that this industry really is there and that it can exist,” said Michaels.
The other breweries and the beers they plan to pour are:
• Atlanta Brewing Co.: Homestead (pilsner) and Hartsfield (IPA)
• Burnt Hickory Brewing Company: Didjits (blood orange IPA), Big Shanty Graham Cracker (milk stout) and Old Wooden Head (double IPA)
• Gate City Brewing Co.: 1864 (IPA) and Copperhead (amber)
• Grumpy Old Men Brewing Co.: Aska (pale ale), Cyclone Larry (IPA), Grasshoppa (double IPA) and Moon Over Blue Ridge (wheat)
• Mercier Orchards: Adele’s Choice (cider) and Grumpy Granny (cider)
• New Realm Brewing Co.: Euphonia (pilsner), Hoptropolis (IPA) and and Hoplandia (IPA)
• Second Self Brewing Co.: Mole Porter and Margarita and Gose
• Scofflaw Brewing Co.: Dirty Beaches (wheat) and Double Jeopardy (double IPA)
