VSU volleyball ends season vs. Montevallo

Jessie Mooney had a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs, Chloe’ Chubilleau added 10 kills and Tammy Reyes-Perez chipped in 35 assists in the Valdosta State volleyball team’s 3-1 loss against Montevallo in the quarterfinal round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Pensacola, Fla., on Friday.
The Blazers (15-18) hit a .324 in the first set with 15 kills in 34 swings, but struggled the rest of the way with 10 kills in the second set and eight in each of the final two sets.
VSU rattled off four straight points to take an 11-10 lead early in the first set, capped with a kill from senior Katie McInnis. The Falcons (22-8) tied the set at 15, but the Blazers went on a 9-0 run for a 24-15 lead, and won the decisive point on a service error by the Falcons, winning 25-16.
The Blazers kept the momentum going early in the second set as they scored six of the first nine points and held a 13-9 lead, before Montevallo tied the set at 13 with four straight points VSU used another big kill from McInnis for a 20-17 lead, but Montevallo ended the set with a 8-1 run for a 25-21 win.
The Falcons raced out to an 11-2 lead in the third set as the teams exchanged points throughout and the Falcons won 25-13.
Montevallo kept the momentum into the fourth set as it scored eight of the first 10 points. Back-to-back points from VSU pulled the Blazers within 15-10, but Montevallo used a 6-0 run for a 21-10 lead and finished 25-13.
Four seniors played their final match in a Blazer uniform: McInnis, Lindsey Robinson, Chubilleau and Chelsea Chavers.
