MOULTRIE, Ga. — Bird hunters and generous donors are wanted to help make a success of this year’s Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office annual dove shoot to benefit a local youth home.
Proceeds from the scheduled Dec. 1 event benefit the Georgia Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch in Hahira, which, despite the name, houses both boys and girls.
“The funds collected from this event are utilized for Christmas support and resources for the children living at the Boys’ Ranch in Hahira,” Colquitt County Sheriff Rod Howell said. “As always, I am humbled and thankful for the support shown by this community.”
The event begins at 11 a.m., with tickets available for $125 per shooter/stand, with the dove shoot beginning after the lunch, which will feature door prizes and an auction.
Howell’s staff is seeking door prizes and auction items from local merchants for the activities. Individuals also can make a donation for the cause.
With five cottages, the Hahira facility is the oldest in the network of youth homes and was opened in 1960. The concept was developed by sheriffs after discussions in the 1950s about concerns about abandoned, neglected and abused children, according to the organization.
To make a monetary donation, or to give a door prize or auction item, contact Howell, Capt. Julius Cox or Mike Murfin at the sheriff’s office at (229) 616-7430.
“This is a family friendly event and we would love for everyone to join this fun-filled day for a worthwhile cause,” Howell said.
