VALDOSTA — The YMCA has installed a 25-meter pool dome.
“We are still setting anchors and air locks,” said Cole Wilson, YMCA aquatics director.
After testing it out during the weekend, the Y opened the dome Monday morning for lap swim hours and Lowndes High School swim team practice.
“The dome will increase comfort for our community as well as programming time for swim lessons, swim team, lap swim, recreational swimming, pool parties, water aerobics, SAW (safety around water program for second graders in both school systems) and life guard certification courses,” said Larry Tobey, YMCA president and chief executive officer.
Out of the five pools in the YMCA AquaPark, 2424 Gornto Road, the 25-meter heated pool was selected to receive the 3,000-pound, 97’ by 60’ covering from the California-based company, Ameri-Dome.
After research and fundraising, the “Y is happy to be able to offer a safe and comfortable aquatics environment for our community to enjoy swimming year around,” YMCA officials said.
The structure will remain up until spring when the weather warms.
Dome contributors include Gary Prine, the Langdale Foundation, Guardian Bank and Valdosta Insurance Services.
Donations are still needed for the $45,000 structure and can be made at valdostaymca.org or by calling the Y, (229) 244-4646.
