DOWLING PARK — The Jo Kennon Public Library will be going to the dogs and a pig later this month.

Farmer Minor will be bringing Daisy the pig and his pugs, Lily Pug and Dixie Cup, to the library on Jan. 23 for “Pig Out on Reading” at 10 a.m. Minor’s “true storytelling” details Daisy’s formative years and how the fame has grown along with how the pugs came to join the family, according to the library’s release.

Also in January, the Jo Kennon Library will host an Armchair Travels presentation Monday to Australia and New Zealand. Oren and Susanna Suave will talk about their recent trips to those countries at 10 a.m.

The library’s Barbershop Chat discussion group will be meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday and Jan. 24. Coffee and snacks are provided as people discuss topics of common interest, ranging from history to current events.

On Thursday, the library will be hosting a food demonstration at 1 p.m. with Jo Arrington of Jo’s Jellies demonstrating how to make jelly with almost anything. She will also have samples of her homemade jellies available for tasting.

Bill Storey is hosting an organizational meeting Friday for the Suwannee River Writers Guild. The group hopes to develop writing skills and help members produce a publishable fiction book.

On Jan. 14, the ACV Camera Club will be meeting at 7 p.m. at the library. Those wishing to attend are asked to bring photos on a jump drive to share with the group and anyone that received a new camera for Christmas or has questions about their camera are encouraged to bring it and the manual with them to the meeting. The library’s rock painting party is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 15. All supplies are provided.

The seed library will be open Jan. 17 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions and three packets of seeds may be checked out every month.

Jack Blair and Jeffry Boatright, of the Defensive Training Academy in Live Oak, will be teaching a defensive training course Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. Boat right is a certified firearms instructor, while Blair has decades of experience in several forms of self-protection and martial arts training.

Among the topics to be covered are situational awareness when shopping, while at home or in the vehicle or walking. Also to be discussed will be avoiding threatening situations and utilizing household tools for protection.

The library, as are all the branches of the Suwannee River Regional Library System, will be closed Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The book club will be meeting Jan. 25 to discuss “The Story of Arthur Truluv” by Elizabeth Berg. Copies are available for checkout at the library.
