Scintilla adds sixth grade

VALDOSTA — Scintilla Charter Academy will have sixth graders roaming its halls next school year.
This comes directly after a State Charter School Commission of Georgia monthly meeting this week, where the new sixth-grade class was approved unanimously and added to SCA’s charter.
“A great deal of work has gone into making the pathway to middle school a reality, and we are thrilled to make this option available for the families in our community,” said Mandy Avera, dean of school.
The incoming sixth graders will be housed in the new E Wing building on the SCA campus. There is intent to add one grade level each year up to eighth grade as part of the charter renewal process, according to a SCA email.
The decision was made the day before the application deadline and less than a week before the charter school’s lottery.
The SCA administration has now extended those deadlines with applications due Feb. 15 and the lottery rescheduled to 6 p.m., Feb. 19, SCA cafeteria.
Sixth-grade classes will start at SCA during the 2019-20 school year, and current fifth graders will automatically receive admission preference.
However, Avera said families of incoming sixth-grade students should still apply because there’s always a chance of a space opening up.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to apply online at scintillacharteracademy.com/admissions or visiting the campus at 2171 E. Park Ave. SCA Tours are available by appointment.
