Matt Hamilton/Daily Citizen-NewsMurray County High School students try on prom dresses that will be for sale during the Prom Dress Expo Saturday at the school's old gym, across from the high school at 1001 Green Road.

CHATSWORTH, Ga. — New prom dresses can cost hundreds of dollars, so it’s not often you’ll find them for sale for just $20.

But during the Prom Dress Expo on Saturday, high school students can choose from more than 300 dresses, in all colors and fashions, for that low price. The expo, which is sponsored by the Murray County High School Dance Team, is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the old Murray gym, across from the high school at 1001 Green Road in Chatsworth.

Upcoming Prom Dress Expo in Chatsworth

“Our whole point is to help those kids who we know can’t afford expensive dresses look the best they can,” said Jennifer Plemons, a math teacher at Murray County High who is organizing the event along with school social worker Tara Jones.

Harvey and Karen Redwine, owners of Satin ‘N Lace, a formal dress store in Chatsworth, donated the dresses ranging in size from 00 to 28. Shoes will be sold for $5 a pair and jewelry will be available. The expo is for any student regardless of the school they attend. A form to schedule an appointment is available at https://goo.gl/forms/5YRWjzFAw6yalLdO2.

Murray County High has a clothes closet for “students who are financially unstable or need help,” Plemons said. Karen Redwine said when she heard the high school had a clothes closet she asked Jones if she would be interested in the dresses. The business had dresses, which are between two and five years old, in stock with the original tags still attached.

Karen Redwine said the expo is an “awesome thing.”

“It’s even better because it’s not just for our community but others, too,” Karen Redwine said. “I’m glad girls who need dresses will be able to utilize them.”

After the Redwines donated the dresses to the school, Plemons and others decided to host the expo. All proceeds benefit the clothes closet.

“We decided since we have so many dresses to do an expo while helping our kids,” Plemons said. “We know that prom dresses can be very pricey.”

Harvey Redwine said the community has been good to their store, so they are happy to give back.

“They’ve supported us for 17 years along with other counties,” he said. “We’re hometown-type people and glad the community will benefit from our donation.”

Chatsworth resident Susan Winkler complimented the Redwines for their generosity.

“I remember back in my time no one did this for the girls,” Winkler said. “I think it’s amazing and we are all blessed because of what they do.”
