VALDOSTA — For Coach Jonathan Oliver, putting hair in ponytails is part of the job description.

When a 22-second video of him doing just that was shared on the City Schools Facebook page earlier this month, it caught nationwide attention.

“We do stuff like this all the time,” Oliver, a P.E. coach at W.G. Nunn Elementary School, said. “We help out as much as we need, and we just try to treat them all like we would treat our own kids.”

The video has more than 3 million views, 50,000 shares and 30,000 reactions. It has been featured on “Good Morning America,” Fox News and ABC News.

Headlines read “This teacher fixing his student’s hair is warming the hearts of millions” and “Video of gym teacher fixing his student’s hair goes viral.”

To Kandice Anderson, a kindergarten assistant teacher and the person behind the camera, she thought the video would go “Valdosta viral.”

“(The student) ran up to coach with a ponytail holder to put her hair up,” Anderson said. “When he got down on one knee, I pulled my phone out. When it hit one million (views), I was shocked.”

Kristen Paulk was the student featured in the video getting her hair tied by Oliver.

Anderson said she has been getting messages from media outlets, while Oliver has been hearing from family members and friends telling him they’re proud.

“For me, I’m not boasting about this, but I am glad there is something good out there,” Oliver said.
