VSU women close regular reason with AUM for Senior Night

VALDOSTA –– The Valdosta State women’s basketball team hosts Auburn Montgomery today at 6 p.m. in the regular season finale and will honor six seniors playing in their final regular season home game.

VSU enters at 18-9 on the year and 12-7 in Gulf South Conference play. VSU has a chance to host a “Super Tuesday” game on Mar. 5, with a win and a Delta State loss at Montevallo. Auburn Montgomery enters with a 5-22 record overall and a 4-15 mark in the conference. The Warhawks won 70-50 against Shorter on Saturday.

Prior to the game, the Lady Blazers will honor the six seniors who have had an outstanding impact on the program with a Sweet Sixteen berth last season and a conference championship the year before. The 2018-19 senior class includes; Maddy Corazza, Sonya Franklin, Kendra Green, Shon Kitchens, Jazmyn McIntosh and Crystal Townsend.

VSU is coming off a 1-1 record last week and earned a big 62-52 win at West Alabama on Saturday earning the series split with the Tigers. Kitchens had a game-high 18 points off the bench in the game on 7 of 11 from the field with two 3-pointers and 2 of 3 from the line. Franklin added 11 points, while sophomore Kayla Bonilla had a career-high 13 rebounds.

Following the Super Tuesday games, the winners will advance to Birmingham, Ala., for the GSC Semifinals and Final, Mar. 9-10. Information on the GSC championship will be available on Friday on vstateblazers.com including the Super Tuesday matchups.

Auburn Montgomery is averaging 50.3 points per game and allowing 60.8. The Warhawks are shooting .344 from the field on 506 of 1473, while the opposition is at a .371 clip on 614 of 1553. AUM is 163 of 599 from beyond the arc (.272), while the opponents have made 13 triples for a .292 average. AUM is 184 of 288 from the line (.639), while averaging 36.7 rebounds per game and allowing 40.8 per contest.

Individually, Jordan Brewster leads the team averaging 14.7 points per game on 137 of 382 from the floor for a .359 clip. She is 104 of 304 from beyond the arc for a .342 average, while going 18 of 24 from the line. Evelina Avleeva is second in scoring at 9.2 points per game and leads the team averaging 7.7 rebounds per game. Avleeva is 91 of 241 from the field (.378) and is a team-best 40 of 63 from the line.

In the previous meeting with the Warhawks, VSU used a strong second half as it outscored AUM 34-21 and 16-6 in the fourth quarter using a 16-2 run to finish the game for the 55-49 victory in Montgomery, Ala. Bonilla had a game-high 20 points as VSU entered the final stanza down 43-39.

The Lady Blazers are shooting at a .384 clip for the season on 603 of 1569, while going 136 of 456 from beyond the arc (.298) and 340 of 542 (.627) from the line. VSU is averaging 41.4 rebounds per game, while allowing 33.5. The team is averaging 62.3 points per game and allowing 57.0. Teams are shooting .376 against VSU and are .279 from beyond the arc this season.

Individually, Bonilla leads the team averaging 11.4 points per game on 102 of 254 from the floor (.402). She is 23 of 70 from range for a .329 average and is a team-best 81 of 110 from the line (.736). She has 91 assists and 44 steals as both lead the team. Townsend is second in scoring at 10.6 points per game as she is 100 of 231 from the field. Townsend leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game. Junior Nari Garner is 41 of 137 from beyond the arc to lead the team as she is averaging 6.1 points per game.
