Valdosta State baseball hosts Augusta today

VALDOSTA –– Coming off its first conference sweep of the season, the Valdosta State baseball team hosts Augusta University today in non-conference action at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

VSU (17-16, 7-10 GSC) is coming off probably its most complete series of the season in a sweep of Auburn Montgomery over the weekend. The Blazers scored 39 runs in the three games, including a season-high 18 runs in the run-rule opener (18-2). VSU hit a blistering .474 for the series on 46 of 97 with six doubles and two home runs, while driving in 36. The Blazers walked 21 times and were hit seven times for a .583 on base percentage, while slugging .598. Senior Andrew Williamson had an outstanding series, hitting .700 on 7 of 10 with three runs scored, three doubles, one home run and seven RBI. Junior Logan Stephens also hit .700 with six runs scored, one double and three RBI.

On the mound, VSU held AUM to a .261 clip, allowing 23 hits, 13 runs, two doubles, one home run and 11 RBI. VSU walked 14 batters and hit three, while striking out AUM 21 times. Junior Tristan Cone went seven innings on the bump for a complete game win, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked two and fanned seven, while junior Jonathan Gettys also picked up a win, going 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs, walked three and fanned seven.

Augusta enters with a 16-18 record and a 5-16 mark in the Peach Belt Conference. The Jags are coming off a 1-2 weekend against Lander and have won just three of their last 11 games. The Jags are led offensively by Zack Goble who leads the team with a .360 average. He is 32 of 89 from the plate with 21 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI. Harrison Moore leads the team with 49 hits and is second in average at a .353 clip. Moore has scored 28 runs with six doubles, three triples, four home runs and 35 RBI. Mason Robertson is third in average at .350 with 42 hits, 35 runs scored, five doubles and four triples, while Patrick Watson leads the team with ten home runs on the year.

As a team, the Jags are hitting .301 with 365 hits, 252 runs scored, 48 doubles, 19 triples, 33 home runs and 231 RBI. The team is slugging .453 and reaching base at a .378 clip, while going 33 of 41 on the base paths and has 48 errors, leading to 57 unearned runs.

On the mound, Tony Jones leads the team in wins at 4-2 in 32.1 innings of work. He has allowed 28 hits, 22 runs – 16 earned, walked 22 and fanned 34 as teams are hitting .233 against him. Christian Griffin leads the team with 46 innings pitched, allowing 45 hits, 45 runs, 35 earned, walked 30 and fanned 51. Augusta has a 5.91 ERA in 298.1 innings, allowing 357 hits, 253 runs – 196 earned, walked 143 and fanned 290 as teams are hitting .294 against it.

For the season, VSU is led by Stephens at a .396 clip on 36 of 91 with 20 runs scored, four doubles, one triple and 17 RBI. He has walked ten times, been hit twice and is 3 for 4 in stolen bases. Senior Josh Broughton is second in average at a .366 clip as he leads the team with 48 hits and is tied for second in runs scored with 28. Broughton has 11 doubles to lead the team with two triples, one home run and 19 RBI. Williamson is third in average at a .341 clip with 28 hits, 10 runs scored, seven doubles, a team-high three home runs and 18 RBI.

The Blazers are hitting .298 for the season on 318 of 1067, while scoring 197 runs with 52 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 172 RBI. VSU is slugging .381 with a .400 on base percentage and has gone 56 of 79 on the base paths. The Blazers have committed 45 errors leading to 22 unearned runs.

Cone leads the team with a 3-0 record and has a 2.89 ERA in 12 appearances with eight starts. He has pitched 46.2 innings to lead the team, allowing 43 hits, 17 runs – 15 earned, walked 15 and fanned 58 as teams are hitting .240 against him. Junior Anthony Dahl is 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA in nine appearances. Gettys is 3-2 in nine starts with a 4.25 ERA in 42.1 innings. He has allowed 38 hits, 25 runs – 20 earned, walked 25 and fanned a team-high 63. Teams are hitting .232 against him.

As a staff, VSU has a 4.20 ERA in 276.2 innings, allowing 242 hits, 151 runs – 129 earned, walked 149 and fanned 332 as teams are hitting .232 against it. VSU has two shutouts, two complete games and seven saves for the season.

Following today’s game, VSU travels to Montevallo for a weekend series and will return home to face Saint Leo a week from today at 5 p.m. at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park, to begin a five-game home stand.
