JASPER — Duke Energy celebrated the opening of the newest and largest solar power plant in Hamilton County on March 26.

“Today we are here to celebrate the opening of the company’s newest and so far the largest universal solar power plant here in Jasper,” Duke Energy President Catherine Stempein said.

The 74.9-megawatt Hamilton Solar Power Plant brings cleaner, smarter energy to benefit Duke Energy’s customers and all Floridians.

According to Rick Cumbie, Florida Regulated Solar Manager, the plant is about 600 acres and contains just fewer than 500 acres of solar panels.

There are 300,000 solar panels which are a mix of 360- and 365-watt panels.

The plant’s power is enough to energize more than 20,000 homes at peak production.

“Hamilton County has been a tremendous partner and supporter of this plant,” Stempein said.

Duke Energy is starting on its seventh solar power plant in Columbia County. Duke plans to invest in 700-megawatts of clean energy by 2022.

The Hamilton Solar Power Plant is located at 3974 SW 69th Drive, Jasper.
