While participants usually run with their dogs, runners are not required to have dogs to race, according to organizers.

“We want people to be able to celebrate their animals and run with them, too,” Jackie Shoemaker, BARC fundraising coordinator, said. “We cater to the furry friends.”

Ghost runners and walkers are welcome to register for the 5K that brings in an average of 90-100 participants, she said.

Awards will be given to the top male and top female in each age category. The top dog winner will also be awarded.

Proceeds will assist with veterinary expenses and medical costs, Shoemaker said.

Early registration, which includes a T-shirt, is $25 and available online at runsignup.com until April 17. Race day registration is $30.
