Live Oak Public Library to host self-publishing classes

LIVE OAK — A three-part series on how to self-publish a book is coming to the Live Oak branch of the Suwannee River Regional Library System the next two months.

The first class in the series will be held Thursday at noon. The other two classes are scheduled for May 30 and June 6, also from noon to 1 p.m.

Shirley Rivers is teaching the class with the first part focused on the first steps to being a self-published author: readying manuscripts for publication, marketing and distribution, selecting platforms, setting up accounts and then steps in the actual publication process.

Opening the Live Oak Library’s adult programs for May is the seed library, which is open every Wednesday in May from 1-3 p.m. Patrons may check out new seeds and get answers to gardening questions from the Master Gardeners. The seed library will be closed June-August before reopening in September with seeds for fall gardens.

Also on Thursday, the Moms 2 Moms group, presented by the Florida Department of Health – Suwannee County, is meeting from 10-10:30 a.m. Door prizes and goodies will be provided. For more information, call Healthy Start at 386-362-2708. The group will meet again May 16.

Coffee will be served in the new book area from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The library will also feature music and socializing Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. as Sherika Duncan celebrates the release of her first book, “The Setup.” Drinks and light appetizers will be available and Duncan will read excerpts from her book as well as signing copies. Books will be available for purchase.

On Monday, bestselling author Tim Dorsey will be signing copies of his newest book, “No Sunscreen for the Dead.” Dorsey, a former journalist in the Tampa area, will also be discussing the book, which was called “compulsively irreverent and shockingly funny” by the “Boston Globe.” Dorsey will have multiple book titles and merchandise available for purchase and signing.

The library’s Recipe Swap is Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. with a focus on salads. Those attending should bring their favorite salad and recipe with them to sample and swap.

Library staff member Debra Barney will teach a knitting class May 8 and crochet class May 15 at 11:30 a.m. in the library’s small conference room. Those attending should bring needles and yarn.

On May 9, Jack Blair and Jeffry Boatright of Defensive Training Academy will lead a defensive training course at 6 p.m. During the course, people will learn techniques for self-protection, situation awareness, avoiding threatening situations and how to utilize household items for protection.

Suwannee County Fire Rescue will teach a free CPR and first aid course May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those completing the class will receive a certificate. Space is limited and preregistration is encouraged. Register by calling the library at 386-362-2317.

Suwannee County Extension Agent Carolyn Saft will present a gardening workshop on soil solarization and cover crops at noon May 16. The workshop will focus on the environmentally friendly methods of controlling bacteria, insects and weeds in the soil.

A free yoga class will be offered May 20 at 5:30 p.m. by certified instructor Jacqi Martin. The class is for ages 13 and older and those attending should bring their own yoga mat, towel and other props that may be desired.

During Sue Ruda’s monthly sewing workshop, the class will make journal covers from noon to 3 p.m. May 21. The library will have premade sewing kits and pre-registration is required. There is a $5 materials fee and the class is limited to 10 spaces.

The library’s Book Club meets May 22 at 2 p.m. to discuss Sarah Bailey’s “The Dark Lake.” Copies are available for checkout at the library’s front desk.

On May 24, the library is hosting Game Day for Adults from 10 a.m. to noon. Scrabble and Dominoes will be available, but those wishing to partake may bring their own games with them.

Tobacco Free Florida and Suwannee River AHEC is offering free tools and services to help people get started quitting tobacco. A workshop will be held May 25 from 10 a.m. to noon in the conference room. Free nicotine replacement patches, gum and lozenges will be available while supplies last. Pre-registration is required by calling 866-341-2730.

The library, and all branches of the Suwannee River Regional Library System, will be closed May 27 for Memorial Day.

The SongFarmers of Live Oak will host their monthly gathering at the library at 5:30 p.m. May 30. The public is invited to attend and join the players’ circle or the audience. The circle plays in an acoustic, jam-style format with multiple styles and genres. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
