VALDOSTA – Theatre Guild Valdosta is looking for Huck Finn and pals to travel down the Mighty Mississippi.
The community theatre troupe will open its 2019-20 season with “Big River,” an adaptation of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” set to the music of Roger Miller.
The show is scheduled to play in the first week and a half of August.
Auditions are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday, May 19, 20, at The Dosta Playhouse, 122 N. Ashley St., organizers said.
“The auditions will consist of cold readings from the script,” Mary Ann Green, show director, said in a statement. “Please be prepared to sing, without accompaniment, either a country or gospel song. Ricardo Ipina, the musical director, and I are not looking for a Disney song or anything on the order of ‘Les Miserables.'”
People auditioning should also wear shoes they can dance in, she said.
The musical requires a large cast, so Guild regulars, people who have stage experience but are new to the Guild and folks with no stage experience are welcome.
And while many of the characters are young, Green said she will have a limit of no younger than 12 years old for “Big River.”
“A word about children in the play,” she said. “Yes, I do want young folks in the show, but it is not a show for the very young. Therefore, I will be limiting the auditions to those 12 or older.”
