Georgia Forestry sets burn permit restriction

VALDOSTA — No residential or debris burn permits will be issued this weekend, according to Lowndes County officials.

Lowndes County was notified Friday afternoon of the restriction by Stephen Spradley, Georgia forestry chief ranger.

According to county officials per Spradley’s notification, the restriction is due to the lack of rain and other weather conditions.

“To be clear, this is not a burn ban,” county officials said in an email statement. “The decision to ban burning is made at the state level. Once conditions improve, the restriction will be lifted.”

Normally, Lowndes County residents would be able to obtain a burn permit from the local Georgia Forestry office. They would then be allowed to burn in a residential area every first and third Saturday of the month.
