LIVE OAK — A former Suwannee High standout and Florida State linebacker will have a book signing Monday at the Live Oak branch of the Suwannee River Regional Library.

Dale McCullers, who played at FSU in the 1960s, will discuss his new book, “FSU’s Sons of the Sixties: A Case for the Defense,” at the library Monday at 6 p.m.

Books will be available for purchase and signing. McCullers also plans to conduct a drawing for two of his books.

All proceeds from the book will go toward the Johnnie Stephens Scholarship Fund. Stephens played at FSU alongside McCullers before being killed while serving in Vietnam in 1969.

The library will kick off its June activities Saturday morning when it serves up coffee in the new book area from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, the library’s Recipe Swap will take place at noon with a focus on picnics. Those attending should bring their favorite picnic recipe and dish. In addition to swapping the recipes, samples will be provided from the dishes.

The Moms 2 Moms Group, presented by the Florida Department of Health – Suwannee County, will meet Thursday at 10 a.m. and again June 20 at 10 a.m. Door prizes and goodies will be provided. For more information about the parental group, call Healthy Start at 386-362-2708.

The final portion of the self publishing class will be Thursday at noon. Shirley Rivers is teaching the steps necessary in order to self publish a book — from getting manuscripts ready to marketing and distribution to selecting platforms and setting up accounts.

On Thursday and June 13, the library is hosting a screening of the PBS documentary “Chasing the Moon” at 6 p.m. The screenings will feature clips from the actual six-hour American Experience series from Academy Award nominee Robert Stone. The documentary will air on PBS from July 8-10. The first screening of the documentary is “Saving 1968” and will focus on the importance of NASA regaining the country’s confidence following the Apollo I fire. The second screening will be “The Giant Leap” and is about the nation’s reaction to Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. The documentary is out in time for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Starting June 10 and running through July 26, the library will be hosting its Adult Summer Reading Program concurrently with its children’s program. The adult program is open to adults, ages 18 and older, and will feature programs, prizes, book discussions and special events. Registration opens June 10 and participants will receive a free bookmark, participation guidelines, a schedule of events and entry into a prize drawing for registering. Prize drawings will be held every Friday. The program’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.”

Also on June 10, a virtual night sky viewing will be held at 6 p.m. Using cell phones or tablets, staff members Robert Trisler and Sarah Wilson will lead attendees through a tour of the night sky using the SkyView app. Stars, constellations and satellites will be identified.

Staff member Debra Barney will conduct a knitting class on June 12 and crochet class June 19, both starting at 11:30 a.m. in the small conference room. Those attending should bring needles and yarn.

Local author and poet Anastasia Clark will have a petty reading June 17 at noon from her latest chapbook, “Confetti Stampede.” Clark is originally from Framingham, Mass., and was a poet-in-residence there in the 1970s. A current Suwannee County resident, Clark has been writing poetry for nearly 45 years. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own poetry with time set aside to share with the audience.

Suwannee Fire Rescue will teach CPR and first aid on June 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those completing the class will receive a certificate. Space is limited for the free class, so preregistration is encouraged by calling the library at 386-362-2317.

Tobacco Free Florida and Suwannee River AHEC are hosting a quitting tobacco class June 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. They will provide free tools and services to help people get started, including free nicotine replacement patches, gum and lozenges, while supplies last and when medically appropriate. The library’s Book Club meets June 26 at 2 p.m. to discuss “I feel bad about my neck: Other thoughts on being a woman” by Nora Ephron. Copies are available at the front desk for checkout.

The SongFarmers of Live Oak’s monthly musical gathering is set for June 27 at 5:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend and can bring their instrument to join the players’ circle or just be part of the audience. All ages and skill levels are welcome for the jam-style acoustic format will multiple genres and styles performed.

The library hosts its Game Day for Adults on June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. Scrabble and dominoes will be available but those attending are welcome to bring their own games.
