TIFTON — Tift County youngsters will have a chance to hit the basketball court this weekend, courtesy of a free camp from former Blue Devil Travis Williams.

The Travis Williams Bouncing through the Community with a Vision Basketball Camp is set for Saturday at Tift County High School. Tift County athletic director Rusty Smith said the camp is being held in conjunction with Tift County basketball. The Blue Devil Basketball Academy had previously been scheduled for this week, but was cancelled.

Participants will be divided up into two sessions for the camp; kindergarten through fifth grade will work from 9 a.m. until noon. Middle and high school grades will be in the gym from 1-4 p.m. Registration is Saturday at 8 a.m.

“I’m coming back home again,” said Williams.

Williams, who scored 1,000 points in two varsity seasons with the Blue Devils, played collegiately at Georgia State, where he also scored 1,000 points. With the end of his playing career, Williams turned to coaching, assisting at Georgia State. He took his first head basketball coaching position at Fort Valley State and spent two seasons as head coach of Tennessee State, leading the Tigers to an 18-15 record in 2012-13 and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Following a stint as head coach at Maynard Jackson High in Atlanta, Williams returned to Georgia State. He was interim head coach this spring for the Panthers.

Throughout his years in coaching, Williams has been active in athletics beyond the playing fields. He is the President/CEO of Academics & Athletics Consulting, which helps prepare athletes prepare for the NCAA Initial Eligibility Center’s requirements.

Since his latest stint at Georgia State, Williams said he’s been focusing on consulting again.

Tift County honored Williams, by inducting him in the inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2014. He is never a stranger to his hometown and has hosted many camps here in previous years, including one two years ago.

Saturday’s camp will be in honor of Williams’ mother, Patricia Ann Williams. Donations to the camp will benefit an academic fund in her name. Williams will also accept donations of school supplies.

“I like giving back to the community,” he said.
