LIVE OAK — Local writers will soon have a group meeting to share ideas and gather feedback on their work.

The Live Oak branch of the Suwannee River Regional Library System is holding its first writer’s group roundtable meeting Sept. 28 from 10-11:30 a.m. During this initial meeting, future dates and times for the group to meet will also be discussed and input is desired from writers.

The group meeting is hosted by Shirley Rivers.

Other programs set for the library in September in crude the seed library reopening today restocked with fall seeds. Seeds may be checked out for free and Master Gardeners will be available to answer any gardening questions. The seed library is open every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. through the fall.

The Moms 2 Moms group meets Thursday and Sept. 19 from 10-10:30 a.m. and door prizes and goodies will be provided. For more information about the program, which is presented by the Florida Department of Health – Suwannee County, call healthy Start at 386-362-2708.

On Friday, the 23rd annual Autumn Artfest fine arts exhibition’s opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the library. Artfest, presented by the Live Oak Artists Guild, will run from Sept. 9-20 during library hours and artwork selected for awards, which will be announced at the opening reception, will also be exhibited from Sept. 23 through Oct. 4 in a “Featured Exhibition” at the library.

On Saturday, the library will serve free coffee in the new book area, as it does the first Saturday of every month, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Staff member Debra Barney will teach a knitting class Sept. 11 and a crochet class Sept. 18. Both will last from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library’s small conference room. Those attending are asked to bring needles and yarn.

The Master Gardeners will host a workshop at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 on beneficial insects for one’s garden.

The library is hosting food demonstrations and tastings Sept. 12 and Sept. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. both days.

The first food demo and tasting will feature yogurt and kefir. Sheryl Wainwright, of Wainwright Dairy & Creamery, will lead the demonstration on how to make the products from scratch with locally-sourced dairy products. Samples will be available for tasting.

On Sept. 23, Will Howland, owner of Arise Coffee Bar and a master roaster, will teach traditional techniques of coffee roasting and blending that are used by professional baristas.

Suwannee County Fire Rescue will teach a CPR and first aid class Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those completing the free class will receive a certificate. Space is limited, so preregistration is advised by calling the library at 386-362-2317.

Banned Books Week is Sept. 22-28 and the library is hosting a celebration of the freedom to read as part of the week on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. As part of the event and to support the freedom to seek and express ideas, John Bell will share readings from popular banned books such as “Black Beauty,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Grapes of Wrath.”

Sept. 24 is National Voter Registration Day and the library will have a booth available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that day for people to register to vote.

The library’s Book Club meets Sept. 25 from 2-3 p.m. and will be discussing Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” one of the American Library Association’s Top 10 most challenged and banned books.

Cheryl Harris with Department of Elder Affairs/SHINE (Serving Health Information Needs of Elders) will be at the library from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 26 to explore and discuss the options available during Medicare open enrollment.

The final SongFarmers of Live Oak gathering for the year will be Sept. 26 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their instruments and voices to the gathering and join the players’ circle. They also may just join the audience and watch the acoustic, jam-style format featuring multiple styles and genres. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

On the fourth Friday of the month, Sept. 27, the library hosts Game Day for Adults from 10 a.m. to noon. Scrabble and Dominoes will be available but those attending may bring their own games as well.

A Quit Smoking Workshop will be held at the library from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 28. Tobacco Free Florida and Suwannee River AHEC will offer free tools and services during the workshop to help smokers get started. Pre-registration is required. Call 866-341-2730 to register.

On Sept. 30, the Paranormal Investigators of North Florida will be at the library at 6 p.m. to present the equipment and investigative techniques used in the study of paranormal science.
