THOMASVILLE — The Supreme Court of Georgia has ordered that Georgia courthouses will remain open during coronavirus precautions, but some specific Thomas County Courthouse functions might be postponed or cancelled.

“The Thomas County Historic Courthouse and Thomas County Judicial Center will remain open until otherwise directed,” said County Manager Mike Stephenson. “All other county agencies, offices and departments will continue normal operations with some exceptions.”

Even Thomas County Jail inmates are feeling changes brought about by the virus scare.

“This is the first weekend we won’t have visitation,” said Thomas County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ron James, jail administrator.

New inmates are checked by the jail nurse for coronavirus symptoms. If the virus is indicated, the inmate will undergo testing, James said.

“We’re being very cautious on the charges we’re bringing in now,” he said.

Individuals arrested for petty crimes are given summons to appear in court and not booked into the jail.

Superior Court functions have been suspended, with the exception of essential functions to be determined by judges.
