VALDOSTA – The City of Valdosta is working to increase safety and control speeding in school zones with school zone safety cameras, according to city officials.
The City of Valdosta and Valdosta Police Department issued statements on Facebook Tuesday about the new enforcement practice.
Citations will be issued starting Jan. 8, 2024, from cameras stationed in front of S.L. Mason Elementary School, 821 W. Gordon St. Warnings in the school area began on Nov. 27.
“We know that our community cares deeply about the well-being of our children. By driving safely and following the posted speed limit, we can ensure that our students arrive to school and return home safely. Let’s work together to keep our children safe as they cross the street and head to class. As a community, we must prioritize the safety of our students,” the statement said.
The post said the enforcement hours will operate one hour before school, throughout the school day and one hour after, only when school is in session. The desired outcome and goal of the program is to get drivers to slow down.
A driver’s first citation will be approximately $75 with subsequent citations amounting to $125. All funds collected will be allocated for public safety programs.
“Thank you for your cooperation in making our streets safer for everyone. Together, we can make a difference and create a positive impact in our community,” the post said.
