Tifton police: Abuse leaves child in critical condition; two charged

TIFTON — Two Tifton men face child cruelty charges after abuse left a toddler in critical condition, authorities said.
Around 7:20 p.m. Feb. 4, police headed to the 1600 block of Carpenter Road on a call about a 22-month-old child breathing but unresponsive, a statement from the City of Tifton said.
Officers found injuries on the child, EMTs arrived and the youngster was taken to Tift Regional Hospital. Detectives determined some type of abuse had taken place, the statement said.
The child’s injuries were so serious they were transferred to a hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where they were in critical condition as of 2 p.m. Friday, police said.
A 23-year-old Tifton man was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of cruelty to children first degree; a second Tifton man, age 25, was charged with two counts of party to crime of aggravated assault and one count of party to crime of cruelty to children first degree, the city’s statement said.
