Pine Grove Elementary students compete for “Golden Spatula”

VALDOSTA — At Pine Grove Elementary School, lunchtime has become more than just a time to refuel — it’s now a thrilling opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and teamwork skills through a daily trivia game.

Each class works together to answer questions correctly to earn points — all working towards the common goal of winning the coveted Golden Spatula Award at the end of each week.

What initially started as a gimmick to keep students entertained before Christmas Break has turned into a school-wide phenomenon that everyone looks forward to.

“We wanted to find a way to focus the students’ energy during lunchtime that was both engaging and social,” says Assistant Principal Renee Griffin.

Trivia spearhead Katie Krawiec, kindergarten paraprofessional, used the break to make trivia even more exciting. She created a theme for each day with categories ranging from classroom review questions to Tourist Tuesday, where all questions are based on vacation destinations, and beyond.

“Our students are not merely engaging in a trivial game; instead, they are acquiring knowledge, sharpening critical thinking skills, and developing teamwork abilities,” Krawiec said.

Students are eager to share their success and what they have learned since trivia began. “I have learned about new states, different kinds of sports, and a lot more in trivia,” said second grader Emory Crouch. Emory looks forward to trivia so much that he delayed a trip to Disney World just to participate with his classmates. “When my mom said I was getting checked out of school before lunch, I begged to stay at least a half day. I really wanted to help my team win!” he said.

Charlie Kirkpatrick, a fellow second-grader, noted the teamwork strategies they use each day. She said, “I always want to pay attention during trivia! I usually answer the Disney questions, and Emory answers the sports ones.”

Once the points are tallied, the winning class gets a surprise visit where they are presented with the Golden Spatula Award and a special treat. This celebration has proven to be incredibly meaningful to students.

“My class has won twice, but we really want to win a third time. Who doesn’t love a golden spatula?” Charlie exclaimed.
