VALDOSTA — In 2023, South Georgia Medical Center was named a Level III trauma center by the Georgia Department of Public Health.
A Level III Trauma Center is prepared to provide an advanced level of care to trauma patients before they even arrive at the hospital. SGMC’s emergency department has undergone specialized training, developed protocol and implemented equipment for the immediate assessment, resuscitation, surgical intervention, and stabilization of injured patients.

The American Trauma Society’s website describes a Level III trauma center as having “an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations.”Elements of Level III trauma centers include:
— 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists.
— A comprehensive quality assessment program.
— Transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.
— Back-up care for rural and community hospitals.
— Continued education of the nursing and allied health personnel or the trauma team

— Prevention efforts and must have an active outreach program for its referring communities.
SGMC is now one of 10 hospitals designated as a Level III Trauma Center in the state of Georgia. SGMC fills a needed gap for a trauma center along Interstate 75 in South Georgia.
