VALDOSTA — The Valdosta City Schools plans to reopen on Thursday following a one-day closure due to storm damage, a spokeswoman told The Valdosta Daily Times just after noon today.

Citing damage from last night’s storm, Valdosta City Schools are closed today.

A message posted to the VCS website approximately 6:15 a.m. said:

Due to overnight storms with downed trees and massive power outages that are impacting some of our schools and homes, Valdosta City Schools will be closed for Wednesday, March 27, 2024. Students will be excused for this absence, and there will be no afterschool activities.

In an email to The Valdosta Daily Times, Lowndes County public information officer Lauren Pope said the county schools remain open but are making allowances due to the weather:

We have been in communication with emergency responders as some areas of our community within the city limits received damage from the storm during the night. Our school buses are taking precautions and avoiding impacted areas. Please use the Here Comes the Bus app to follow any delays. If you travel through the city, please follow EMA Lowndes to know the areas and major intersections to avoid. Anyone who cannot travel safely to school will be excused.

No other school system has contacted the Daily Times about school closures, but we will update this information as we learn more.
