Lowndes Vikings first at region track meet

Lowndes Vikings excelled in all phases of the Region 1-7A track and field meet Wednesday, winning first place as a team. The VIkettes were second.

VALDOSTA — Lowndes’s Vikings raised the Region 1-7A track and field trophy Wednesday, but Richmond Hill pulled an upset in the girls’ division, preventing a sweep.

The Vikings finished the day at 192.5 points, with Richmond Hill second at 158 and Valdosta third at 151. Richmond Hill’s Lady Wildcats won with 267 points, with Lowndes runner-up at 197 and Valdosta third at 119.5.

The top four in each event qualified for sectionals, scheduled for May 4 at Valdosta High. Region 1, 2, 4 and 7 will compete here for a shot at the state finals.

Jacarre’ Fleming won the 100 meters in 10.72 seconds, with teammate Keylan Hicks within an eyelash at 10.74. Matthew Miller was first in the 800 at 1;59. Hicks avenged his second place with a win in long jump, clearing 23-1.75.

The Vikings were first in the 4×100 relay in 41.54 seconds and the 4×800 in 8:15. Camerin Rigdn had another field event victory, scaling an impressive 14 feet to win pole vault. Kaleece Williams made it a double Lowndes win in pole vault, at 8-6.

For the Vikettes, Kendall Johnson was first in the 400 and 800, running in 57.31 seconds and 2:17, respectively. They had a relay win in the 4×400 in 3:59. Jahkiya Rowe gave Lowndes a long jump sweep with a leap of 17-9.5. Ariyah Davis cleared 5-4 to win high jump. Discus went to Janiyah McKeithen in 111-8.

Jamir Bradley had one of three individual victories for the Valdosta boys at region, coming in the high jump. Bradley sailed over 6-4 to win. Anthony Brown won the triple jump in 44-7.5. Jalen Burgess was tops in shot put at 48-4.

Valdosta’s 4×200 boys team edged Lowndes to win that event in 1:27. The ‘Cats earned victory in the 4×400 by five seconds.

The Lady ‘Cats had one win Wednesday, Makiyah Brewton in triple jump at 36-11.
