VSU men’s tennis wins Gulf South championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 3-ranked Valdosta State men’s tennis team won 4-0 over No. 26 Mississippi College in the Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Championship match Monday at Lagoon Park and O’Connor Tennis Center.
The Blazers, who won their GSC-record 16th conference title, didn’t drop a point throughout the tournament with wins over Montevallo (4-0), Lee (4-0) and now the Choctaws (4-0). VSU improved to 20-3 overall, while MC fell to 13-10. The Blazers, who won last year’s championship, are 16-12 all-time now in the championship match, and 75-18 overall for the GSC postseason championship.
VSU earned the GSC’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA South Regional which the NCAA postseason field is scheduled to be announced a week from today (May 6) at 8 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 13-14 at two regional sites, with the winners of the two sites advancing to the NCAA National Championship rounds May 21-25 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Against Mississippi College, who was making its first appearance in the championship match in program history, the Blazers used a 6-0 win at the No. 2 doubles position from juniors Takeshi Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk, while at the third doubles spot, No. 31-ranked duo of junior Boruch Skierkier and sophomore Jan Skerbatis won 6-2 claiming the doubles point.
In singles, Taco, ranked sixth nationally, made quick work of Alvaro Saint Martin at the third spot, 6-0, 6-2, for a 2-0 lead, while senior Rodrigo Carvalho defeated Sergio Ocana 6-4, 6-4 for a 3-0 lead and Skierkier, ranked 20th nationally, downed Rafael Sabio 6-2, 7-5 for the match winner.
