JASPER, Fla. — A chase in north Florida involving Lowndes County deputies resulted in the death of a child and the arrest of a driver on Tuesday, Florida officials said Wednesday.
Lowndes deputies first got involved when they saw an SUV heading south on I-75 near Exit 13 at 126 mph, said Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk.
The deputies followed the car into Hamilton County, Fla. This is allowed under a common rule of hot pursuit, allowing law enforcement to cross state lines as long they maintain visual contact with the suspect vehicle.
When the fleeing driver tried to avoid stop sticks set out by Hamilton County deputies, the SUV collided with another car, the Florida Highway Patrol report stated.
After that collision, the SUV and a Lowndes County deputy’s cruiser collided. As a result of that impact, an 11-year-old child from Riviera Beach, Fla., was ejected from the SUV and killed, the Florida report stated.
The Lowndes deputy’s cruiser was not the cause of the accident, Paulk said.
Meanwhile, the first car the SUV hit became engulfed in flames.
Occupants from the SUV and the car that burned were taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., and Valdosta’s South Georgia Medical Center, the FHP report said.
Of the six people in the SUV, five were children, ranging from 15 years old to 5 months old, the report said. One 5-month-old was in serious condition while another 5-month-old was in critical condition; a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were each in serious condition while the driver received minor injuries, the Florida patrol said. All were from Riviera Beach.
A 63-year-old man and an 11-year-old, both from Atlanta, were in the car that burned but received only minor injuries.
The Lowndes County deputy, 53, received minor injuries too.
The driver of the SUV was arrested by Lowndes deputies, the report said.
Tisha Andrea Brown, 30, was charged by Lowndes County deputies with six counts of false imprisonment and one count of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, a statement from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said. More felony warrants are expected from the state of Florida, the statement said.
