VALDOSTA — In a called meeting Friday, the Valdosta Board of Education briefly discussed and approved the Student Code of Conduct for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The key updates to the code include implementing late arrivals or early dismissals due to inclement weather and modifications in handling bus misconduct matters.

Faculty members are working on finalizing the specific times for late arrivals and early dismissals, which will vary depending on the weather scenario.

A notable change in the revised code involves the handling of bus misconduct. Bus drivers have the authority to place infractions on students who misbehave on their school bus. To help maintain order, drivers can assign special seats to any student as needed.

According to the 2024-2025 Student Code of Conduct, riding the school bus is a privilege for each student. If the rules and regulations are not followed, the student may lose the opportunity to ride the bus. Multiple offenses will result in prolonged suspension from riding the bus.

Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to and from school if this privilege is suspended or revoked. A bus suspension is not considered an excused tardy or absence and may result in additional consequences, such as a social worker referral for lack of attendance.

Fighting on a school bus is among the most severe offenses. Students who fight endanger themselves and everyone on the bus by diverting the driver’s attention, the school system said. Fighting will result in immediate suspension from the bus without prior warning or disciplinary action.

Additionally, the board emphasized that student incivility, particularly the disrespect of teachers, faculty, and staff, will not be tolerated. This stance aims to foster a more respectful and conducive learning environment within the school community.

The board approved the revised 2024-2025 Student Code of Conduct, which will be implemented in the upcoming school year.
