UPDATE: Lowndes, Valdosta, Valwood schools postpone classes

HAHIRA — Valwood has postponed its back-to-school events. 

“Due to the rainfall in our area, along with flooding, potential road conditions and power outages, we are postponing all back-to-school events, including open house and the first day of school one day,” stated Valwood on Facebook.

Valwood posted an updated schedule for back-to-school happenings:

On Aug. 7, will be a senior meeting at 9 a.m. New student orientations are at 1:30 p.m., with new student open house from 2-3 p.m. All students will have open house from 3-5 p.m. 

Convocation will be 8 a.m. Aug. 8, with dismissal at noon. The first full day of school is Aug. 9.

VALDOSTA — Valdosta City Schools will remain closed through Tuesday as the community works to recover from the damage caused by Tropical Storm Debby, the school system said in an email Monday afternoon.

“Several members of the Wildcat family are still without power, as are some of our schools, and we have reports of water in some of our buildings,” the email to The Daily Times said.

“We will continue to monitor further impacts of the storm as it is still slowly passing through our community,” the school system added. “Please stay off the roads and stay safe.”

VALDOSTA — Lowndes County Schools, which had closed its offices today due to the approach of Tropical Storm Debby, announced today that it is postponing all scheduled activities including open house and the first day of classes.

Open house events had been planned for Monday at all elementary and middle schools and the Ignite program for rising ninth graders and their parents. On Sunday they had been postponed until Tuesday, but their schedules will now be decided after the storm passes.

The Journey Program was to have had its open house Tuesday, and the first day of school was planned for Wednesday. They are also on hold for now.

“Due to the rainfall in our area, along with flooding, potential road conditions, and power outages, we are postponing Open House and all other scheduled activities including the first day of school,” the Lowndes County School System said in a notice to parents early Monday afternoon. “Once the storm passes through, we will assess safety conditions before determining when activities will reconvene. Open House and Ignite will be rescheduled when it is safe for our staff, students, and families to access roadways and facilities. We will keep you updated. The safety of our staff and students is always our top priority.”

The Lowndes County Board of Education meeting originally scheduled for Monday evening was moved to 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to the school system’s posting on Sunday, but it has also been postponed until the school system can assess its facilities after the storm.
