VALDOSTA — In addition to its other impacts, Tropical Storm Debby overwhelmed the City of Valdosta’s sewage system resulting in at least four notable spills.
During the storm, the city saw rainfall from three to six inches in various areas, the City of Valdosta said in a press release Tuesday afternoon.
“Due to the excessive rain, the City’s Sanitary Sewer and Stormwater Collection Systems were mostly overwhelmed,” the press release said. “The Sanitary Sewer system experienced hydraulic overload, resulting in a few Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) across the City. Hydraulic overload occurs when the flow rate of wastewater exceeds the sewer capacity, leading to backups or pressure relief through manholes, line breakage, or other events.”
City staff responded to four such overflows, all caused by infiltration and inflow of water:
— 300 Knob Hill Drive: 6-10 p.m., estimated 8,000 gallons.
— 817 Gornto Road: 1-7 p.m., estimated 6,000 gallons.
— 1020 Williamsburg Drive: 6-10 p.m., estimated 7,000 gallons.
— 1212 Wainwright Drive, noon-6 p.m., estimated 9,000 gallons.
All required regulatory authorities and other requested entities have been notified of this issue, the city press release said. The city is following all required testing and monitoring of the affected waterways and will continue to do so per Georgia Environmental Protection Division regulations, it said.
