VALDOSTA — After the wholesale destruction of Hurricane Helene, South Georgia can look forward to nothing but clear skies and balmy temperatures for the next week, forecasters said.

“There’s a very nice week ahead,” said Isaac Longley, a meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather. “A lot of sunshine on the way.”

The next seven days should bring sunny skies to Lowndes County with daytime highs ranging from the mid-70s to the low 80s, with nights clear and cool with lows in the 50s to low 60s, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

The driving force behind the pleasant weather will be a large high pressure system building over the Southeast, said Karleisa Rogacheski, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

Humidity should be low for the net week, she said.

The projected temperatures are in line with the usual highs and lows for this time of year, Longley said.

Rain is highly unlikely, as is severe weather, both forecasters said.

In the wake of a hurricane that did significant damage in and around Valdosta, Rocacheski said forecasters are watching a couple of tropical systems that are building out in the Atlantic but pose no threat to the U.S. in the next week.
