VALDOSTA — Metro Valdosta’s jobless rate dropped slightly in September.
The unemployment rate for the four-county area — Brooks, Lowndes, Lanier and Echols counties — was 3.6% in September, down one-tenth of a percent from August, according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Labor.
The labor force increased in Valdosta by 475 and ended the month with 63,666. That number went up by 854 when compared to September of 2023, the statement said.
Valdosta finished the month with 61,355 employed residents. That number increased by 1,122 over the month and went up by 675 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Valdosta ended September with 57,500 jobs. That number went up by 300 from August and went up by 900 when compared to this time last year, the labor department said.
In September, initial unemployment claims decreased by 15 in Valdosta. When comparing September 2024 claims to September 2023, claims were down by 274, totaling 192.
“This fall, unemployment rates are dropping all across Georgia,” said Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “While some metro areas throughout the state have seen a slight dip in jobs, the overall increase in employment shows that more residents are finding work and contributing to our local economies. I will continue to fight for the resources our citizens need to thrive and ensure that Georgia’s economy remains competitive and the No. 1 place to do business for years to come.”
