VALDOSTA — What started as a welfare check by police Saturday turned into a series of drug and firearms charges against a Quitman man.

Around 8 a.m., officers headed to the 500 block of Green Street after an E911 caller asked police to check on a woman in the home, a Valdosta Police Department statement said. The caller said the woman may have been involved in a domestic dispute involving a gun.

At the home, they contacted the woman, who said she was all right and confirmed that a suspect was in the house with a handgun, police said. A police K9 unit demanded the suspect come out, and after several more verbal orders, he did so.
