High school cross country competes at state

CARROLLTON — A pair of Lowndes runners finished among the top 30 at the Class 6A state cross country meet Saturday, but Region 1-6A teams found it tough overall.
Kendall Johnson of the Vikettes was 26th overall in 20:45. Dylan Chambers, also of Lowndes, was 27th in his race in 17:13.
Marietta’s girls won the Class 6A title with two of its runners placing in the top six. Region 1-6A’s other representative, Richmond Hill, placed seventh. In the boys division, Denmark won the championship and Lambert’s Jackson Hogsed won the individual title in 15:42.
Valdosta’s quickest to the finish line was Patrick Wallace, whose time of 17:31 gave him 45th place overall. The Wildcats finished two places ahead of Lowndes in the team standings as four runners were in the top 100.
Brandon Reyes completed the race in 17:54, David Boatright in 18:06 and ran in Zane Tribble in 18:20, with Marcus Boyd in 19:11, Carter McGhin in 19:22 and Austin Sanderson in 19:51.
For Lowndes, Michael Gemma’s time of 18:01 was 75th overall. Ethan Burnett (18:31), Avery Adkins (18:35, Corbin Young (19:22), Jaylen Johnson (20:51) and Tucker Wilbanks (20:56) ran at state for the Vikings along with Chambers.
Of the 169 runners in the 6A boys’ meet, 162 ran the course in under 20 minutes.
Also in the Vikettes’ lineup, Kelsie Herndon (in 24:17), Annyson Warren (24:19), Yuka Bass (25:53), Alyssa Youmans (27:43) and Valerie Roberts (29:37).
