VALDOSTA — SGMC Health recognized Brandi Seay with the October DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing. Seay, an emergency room nurse at SGMC Health Smith Northview, was nominated by emergency room physician, Xenophon Mucciarone, DO, who shared a story of her dedication and selflessness.
In a recent instance when the department experienced an unprecedented amount of nursing call-ins, Seay stayed hours past her shift without being asked, the health system said in a press release. When asked why she chose to stay, she expressed her concern that leaving would have forced her remaining team members to absorb unsafe patient loads.
Not only did Seay stay late, but she also took it upon herself to ensure patients in the lobby were triaged while continuing to provide excellent care to those already in her charge, the health system said. Her actions were instrumental in keeping the department running smoothly, and her dedication to patient safety was apparent throughout her extra hours. Despite the added responsibilities, Seay remained positive and focused, not once complaining about the additional work.
“Brandi went above and beyond when the department needed her most, showing an unwavering commitment to her patients and her team,” said Dr. Mucciarone. “Her actions exemplify the highest standards of nursing care and compassion.”
SGMC Health continues to ask patients and fellow employees to honor nurses they feel go above and beyond in their actions and care. Nominations are reviewed by a committee based on criteria that include compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, skills, and knowledge.
DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies was generously donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health’s DAISY Award.
