VALDOSTA — Unity Park was transformed for the holidays on Friday evening as residents gathered for the highly anticipated annual tree lighting event, a cornerstone of Valdosta and Lowndes County’s holiday season.
Families, local leaders, and community members came together to celebrate an evening filled with festive activities, laughter, and holiday cheer.
Attendees were greeted warmly by Mayor Scott James Matheson and Lowndes County Commission Chairman Bill Slaughter, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s support and participation.
The evening was brimming with plenty of activities for the families and visitors. Children enjoyed a whimsical train ride, and some played in simple snow created by a snow machine. Meanwhile, mischievous Grinch antics added playful humor throughout the event. Free hot chocolate warmed hands and hearts as families explored the festive park.
The Valdosta High School chorus provided a collection of holiday classics, filling the air with seasonal melodies. Slaughter captivated the crowd with a special reading of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” from Santa’s sleigh, shortly before Santa himself made a grand appearance. Excited children lined up to share their holiday wishes with the jolly visitor.
The celebration also spotlighted young artistic talent with the announcement of the winners of a holiday art contest. First place went to Adelynn Brown, while Daliss Marshall claimed second place. Their creative works will be proudly displayed throughout the holiday season.
Before the tree was lit, Mayor Matheson conducted a lighthearted interview with Santa, delighting the audience and building anticipation. As the dazzling lights illuminated the park, the crowd erupted in cheers, marking a bright start to the holiday season.
