VALDOSTA — Sections of Valdosta were suffering from low water pressure Monday morning after a 12-inch water main burst.
The broken main was located on Gornto Road near the train tracks at the YMCA building. City work crews were on the scene and water could be seen gushing out of the ground around 10:30 a.m.
Water pressure was low as far as the 2200 block of Baytree Road by the interstate, and Walmart on Norman Drive was closed as a result. Lowndes High School was providing bottled water to staff and students and foresaw no problems with lunch service; however, students were allowed to check out and take part in virtual instruction, a school Facebook posting said.
Due to the repair work, westbound traffic on Gornto Road was being detoured onto Park Lane, while eastbound traffic was being rerouted onto Englewood Drive.
In a Facebook posting, the city said there was no estimated time for completing repairs. No boil water advisories have been issued. The city urged residents to conserve water, prepare for possible service disruptions by storing water for cooking, drinking and hygiene needs and by keeping updated on the situation.
