VALDOSTA — Police have launched a homicide investigation into the case of a man who died early Monday.
Around 3:10 a.m., officers headed to the 700 block of Stillwater Drive after E911 received calls about gunshots, a Valdosta Police Department statement said. One caller said someone appeared to be lying on the ground next to a vehicle.
Police found a 41-year-old man unresponsive on the ground with “obvious signs of trauma,” the statement said.
The man died at the scene, according to police.
The county coroner’s office got the call to come out at 4 a.m., said Timothy Willis, deputy coroner for Lowndes County. Willis confirmed the man had gunshot wounds.
Detectives have a “person of interest” in this case, which was an isolated incident, police said.
The body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s medical examiner for an autopsy, Willis said.
No more information will be released at this time, the police statement said.
