VALDOSTA — Police arrested a man who tried to outrun them on a motor scooter Tuesday.

Around 10:30 a.m., officers were in the 600 block of East Ann Street, looking for someone suspected of discharging a firearm on several occasions, a Valdosta Police Department statement said.

Video surveillance gave them the man’s identity; he had active arrest warrants from Tift County, the statement said.

Police found the man riding a motor scooter and tried to stop him, but the suspect refused to pull over and tried to flee. During the ensuing pursuit, an officer saw a firearm on the suspect’s hip, police said.

The police followed the suspect until he wrecked in the 700 block of North Ashley Street. He refused to cooperate and resisted arrest, the police statement said. After a brief struggle, he was arrested and detectives seized a handgun, a shotgun reported as stolen, some Alpha-PVP and cocaine, the statement said.

The suspect — a 43-year-old Valdosta man — was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of Alpha-PVP with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, obstruction of an officer, fleeing and attempting to elude and several traffic violations, the police statement said.

“This was incredible teamwork between our officers and detectives.  This offender’s actions put our officers and our citizens at risk, but because of the persistence of our staff, he was taken into custody without anyone getting injured,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan.
