VALDOSTA — Valdosta’s city council voted Thursday to seek a grant to help pay for road repairs in the wake of violent weather that hammered the city in the past few months.
The grant application will be to the 2025 Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, a state program for grants and low-interest loans for transportation projects, said City Engineer Ben O’Dowd.
Hurricane Helene slammed into Lowndes County from the Gulf of Mexico in September as a Category 2 storm with wind speeds from 96-109 miles per hour. The severe damage caused in South Georgia by the storm was followed later in the year by heavy flooding.
Among the streets and projects that a grant could help would be Barack Obama Boulevard, River Street, Gornto Road, Country Club Drive and a bridge on Gornto Road, O’Dowd said. Portions of Gornto Road are closed due to the need for bridge work.
Country Club Drive and Cypress Street were among those roadways damaged by heavy weather, the city said in a November statement.
In other matters, council voted to table until February a decision on deleting a portion of the land development regulations for Valdosta concerning landscape, buffers and screening. The idea had already been tabled in November.
