VALDOSTA — A traffic stop on I-75 Wednesday in Lowndes County resulted in the seizure of marijuana.
Around 8:25 p.m., deputies with the sheriff’s department’s interstate criminal enforcement unit stopped a van at the 15 mile marker on I-75 for a “minor traffic infraction,” a statement from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver and sole occupant was heading from Michigan to Florida. Deputies could smell an illegal substance in the van; the driver gave consent to search and lawmen found large duffle bags with packages of suspected marijuana, the statement said.
The rear cargo area, a factory compartment built into the floorboard of the van was completely filled with packages, the sheriff’s office said.
About 185 packages of marijuana weighing about 200 pounds were recovered from the vehicle and some U.S. currency was seized, the statement said.
Charges in the case are pending further investigation.
