Lowndes hunkers down for snowstorm

VALDOSTA — Lowndes County prepared itself for a rare winter storm Tuesday.

The National Weather Service raised its snow forecast for the county to two inches overnight into Wednesday morning, with snow possibly appearing as soon as 4 p.m., a statement from Lowndes County Emergency Management said.

County offices were set to close at 4 p.m. Tuesday, remaining closed Wednesday. City of Valdosta offices were also set to close Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The city issued a traffic advisory, asking drivers to stay off the roads except for work, medical needs or obtaining supplies, in order to avoid accidents on iced-over streets.

The city’s municipal court will be closed Wednesday, and Valdosta On-Demand, the city’s public transportation system, was scheduled to “pause” at 6 p.m. Tuesday and stay that way as soon as the weather permits.

Most area schools are closing Wednesday.

The National Weather Service forecast for Valdosta showed lows around 24 degrees for three nights straight this week.
