VALDOSTA — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Day of Service,” veterans from J.C. Williams Amvets Post 607, 728 E. Hill Ave., along with other community organizations, provided warm items to more than 40 area families and other individuals during a warm clothing giveaway Jan. 18.
The people who stopped by could select from new and “gently worn” coats, jackets, sweaters, gloves, scarves, socks, hats, blankets, and other items. Items were available for adults and children.
The event was organized by 2nd Vice Commander Natalie Smith under the leadership of Commander Victor Colston. Dr. Beverley Blake, vice president of National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), assisted with the recruitment of volunteers. In addition to the veterans organization, volunteers included the Amvets Ladies Auxiliary and other members, NCNW members, Teen Explosion and others.
