Valdosta to host wrestling sectionals

VALDOSTA — Valdosta High will be the scene Saturday of Section A of the Class 6A traditional boys wrestling tournament.

Athletes from Regions 1, 2, 3 and 5 head to the ‘Cat Cage, where the top eight in each weight division move on to the state tournament, slated for Feb. 13-15 at the Macon Coliseum.

One day before the boys take to the mats, the Section A girls traditional tournament wrestle at Houston County High. Lowndes posted 19 team points at the Area 1 girls tournament, which took place Jan. 31 at Houston County. All were scored by Valrie Medina, who was second at 140 pounds.

Medina won by pinfall in the quarterfinals and semifinals, setting up a match with Chloe Barrett of Houston County, who has a 40-5 record. Official results show Medina falling 7-1 in the finals.

Camden County and Colquitt County were the top two Region 1 boys teams last Saturday at Tift County High. Camden scored 292.5 points and Colquitt had 206. Every region individual champion came from either of the schools; Camden had 12 winners and Colquitt had two.

The top four wrestlers from each weight class will be at sectionals. Fifth-place wrestlers will be on hand as alternates in case of injury.

Though Colquitt and Camden had all of the region champions, several local wrestlers were runners-up.

Lowndes had one, Noah Scott at 106 pounds, with two from Valdosta: Marquavious Lane (120 pounds)  and Simeon Roundtree (285).

Lane dropped a 10-6 decision to Isaac Santos of Camden in the finals, only his third loss this season against 33 wins. Roundtree was pinned in the finals by Joseph Schulze of Camden.

Third-place wrestlers were Michael Densmore (106), Tavaris Sharp (126), Landon Sampson (190) and Alfonso McCloud (215) from Valdosta and William Hasty (120) and Jake Scurlock (157) from Lowndes

Cal Little (132) and Ian Stephens (144) of the Vikings are going to sectionals after earning fourth. Valdosta’s fourth-place wrestlers were Elijah Barnes (138) and Jahsir Pleasant (157).

Daniel Duncan (150), Jayden Stretz (165) and Carlos Guerrero (175) of Valdosta are alternates.
