VALDOSTA — SGMC Health honored Deborah Fussell, medical assistant at SGMC Gastroenterology, as the recipient of the February Being Extraordinary Everyday (BEE) Award. Fussell was recognized for her selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to patient care, the health system said.
Fussell’s nomination stems from her extraordinary efforts during a rare South Georgia snowstorm, where Valdosta received approximately 4 inches of snow. While the outpatient clinic she works at was closed due to the storm, the hospital staff were working overtime to ensure patients were being well taken care of despite hazardous road conditions. Fussell recognized this, and living within walking distance of SGMC Health Main, decided to come in to offer her assistance wherever needed.
Fussell was placed on 3W, a medical surgical unit, to assist with patient care tasks. The nurses on the unit took notice of her dedication and willingness to help despite being outside of her usual role.
“She is not used to working as a patient care technician on the inpatient side, but she was so willing to learn and pitch in wherever she was needed,” her nomination read. “She had an amazing attitude and exhibited what SGMC Health is all about: teamwork and coming together in difficult times to take excellent care of our precious patients.”
Fussell quickly adapted by learning new skills from patient care technicians, including changing telemetry box batteries and inputting vitals into the medical record system. She also provided direct patient assistance, such as distributing blankets, passing ice, and aiding with personal care needs.
“Deborah’s actions during this unexpected weather event highlight the best of SGMC Health’s culture: teamwork, dedication, and a passion for patient care,” said Brenda Alexander, vice president of the SGMC Physician Network and chief human resources officer. “Her willingness to step up in an unfamiliar setting speaks volumes about her work ethic and compassion.”
The BEE Award is presented monthly to recognize non-nursing staff members, including patient care technicians, nursing assistants, and medical assistants, who exemplify extraordinary dedication, teamwork, and compassion in supporting the nursing staff. Nomination criteria include qualities like leadership, attitude, and clinical skills.
SGMC Health offers a variety of recognition programs to honor employees who embody its core values of “Remarkable People, Extraordinary Care, Human Kindness.” To learn more about the BEE Award and other recognition programs, visit sgmc.org/recognition.
