This 1836-1838 map of South Georgia was drawn by Dr. Jacob Rhett Motte (1811-1868), an Army surgeon who accompanied Major Greenleaf Dearborn and federal troops through Lowndes County during the Creek and Seminole Wars. Motte arrived in Franklinville in October 1836 and described the community as the only town in Lowndes County with only three log cabins, including a courthouse, Post Office, and store.
