VALDOSTA — SGMC Health will once again offer its Volunteen Summer Program, providing high school students with a unique chance to explore the world of healthcare and community service.
This hands-on program allows participants to gain firsthand experience in a hospital setting, deepening their understanding of patient care and medical operations, the health system said in a press release.
Designed to be both educational and inspiring, the Volunteen Summer Program immerses students in various hospital departments, where they can observe healthcare professionals in action. From witnessing the dedication to patient-centered care to learning about the administrative processes that ensure smooth operations, participants will gain a well-rounded perspective on the healthcare field, SGMC Health said.
Accepted students will commit to two shifts per week, each lasting four hours, from June 9 through July 25. This structured experience not only introduces Volunteens to various avenues in healthcare but also helps them build meaningful volunteer hours that can enhance their academic and career aspirations.
“Our Volunteen program reflects our dedication to shaping the future of healthcare,” said Hilary Willis, director of development and volunteer engagement. “By giving students the opportunity to engage with professionals and experience the healthcare environment up close, we hope to inspire the next generation of compassionate and innovative leaders.”
The program is open to rising ninth through twelfth graders who maintain a B average or higher. Interested students must submit their applications by May 2.
Last year’s Volunteens collectively contributed an impressive 1,820 hours of service, making a meaningful impact on both staff and patients alike, the hospital said.
