VALDOSTA — On March 4, Valdosta State University’s Sociology of Music class hosted The Family Village of Aya for a West African drum and dance lesson. The Family Village of Aya is a Valdosta-based organization whose mission is to keep the cultural arts, education, and rhythm alive in the community. Twelve VSU students learned about the historical and cultural roots of a dance called Senti before performing some of the introductory movements themselves.
Professor Tom Hochschild said that this class is designed for students to “learn by doing.”
“Although these students are learning sociological theories and concepts in class, I’ve designed the course so that there is a lot of active learning.” He added, “After some initial nervousness tonight, it was great to see students get more comfortable and shine with their dance moves.”
Leneka Allen, who helps lead The Family Village of Aya, said that there are numerous benefits to this type of dance instruction including, “appreciation for music, bridging cultural gaps, and alleviation of stress.” Anyone interested in learning more about West African drum and dance can find The Family Village of Aya on Facebook.
