VALDOSTA —  It’s getting warmer, then it’s getting cooler. Then it’s getting warmer again.

South Georgia will be warming up a bit heading into the weekend, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service forecast for Valdosta shows highs climbing from 62 on Thursday to the mid-70s Saturday.

Overnight lows are expected to range from the low 60s early on to the mid-40s at the beginning of the week.

Most of that will be under sunny skies until the weekend, when high rain chances are expected.  The weather service is calling for an 80% chance of rain in Valdosta Sunday.

Following the weekend rain, a high pressure center will dominate the weather, said Ricardo Humphries, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

“We can expect a couple of showers Saturday and Sunday,” said Scott Homan, senior meteorologist for the private forecasting firm AccuWeather. He said rain should total from one-half to one inch over the weekend.

The high pressure system expected to follow the rain means sunshine and dry, warmer weather patterns early in the week, Homan said.

The two forecasters differed on the chances for severe weather. Homan said he didn’t see much of a chance for rough weather, while Humphries said the weekend was “worth watching out for.”
