Lowndes Vikings stay atop region baseball standings

VALDOSTA — Lowndes remains at the top of the Region 1-6A baseball standings after walking off a 4-3 win Tuesday over Camden County.

Camden entered the contest winless in the region at 0-6, but took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. After the Vikings went up 3-2 in the fifth, the Wildcats scored once in the sixth.

Lowndes loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, according to official stats on GameChanger. Cason Fletcher immediately delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Heath Davis.

Camden held Lowndes to four hits. Fletcher drove in three of the four runs. Noah Burnham got the win on the mound.

Meanwhile, the Valdosta Wildcats mustered only three hits but almost made the most of them. They dropped a 4-2 game at Richmond Hill.

The coastal Wildcats scored three times in the second inning. Both had a run in the sixth. Stephen Little continued his good work with the bat by driving in a run. Matt Bounds had two hits. Brooks Carter and Colton Howard shared pitching duties.

Through seven games, Lowndes leads the 1-6A standings with a 6-1 mark. Their sole loss was a week ago, to Colquitt County.

Tift County is in second place at 5-2 after winning 2-1 Tuesday over Colquitt County. In a season already tough for them in injuries, the Blue Devils lost a key member of the roster, Will Pridgen, who slammed into the wooden centerfield wall while making a diving catch.

Colquitt’s Packers are 4-3. They will host Tift in a doubleheader Friday. Richmond Hill and Valdosta are tied at 3-4. Camden is still searching for its first region win at 0-7.

Lowndes will travel to Camden on Friday for two. Valdosta hosts Richmond Hill in another doubleheader. Next week is the highly-anticipated Vikings-Devils series. Valdosta plays Colquitt.

After next week, all Region 1 teams will take a respite from region competition before finishing up that portion of their schedules April 8-11.
